Home health nursing, as the name itself suggests, is a process of visiting various patients who are basically homebound and need to be taken care of. Many surveys suggest that there are more and more patients in the homebound setting needing nursing and treatment for their ailments and health problems. Home health nursing allows the patient and their family to have dignity, respect and liberty. It includes offering patient care for various medical problems ranging from common fever to cancer, educating the patients and their families about the treatment and diagnosis, prescribing medication, reporting the research to physicians.

The assessment of the problems is done from head to toe. The nurses take their own time in finding out the problem based on the physician’s suggestion and report the research to them. They have a complete detailed report about each visit and the next visit is based upon the previous report. Normal checkups are carried on depending upon the nature of the problem. Monitoring the medication and health is also taught by the nurses. The dosages, side effects and other normal specifications are explained to the patients. The exercises, food diet, restrictions are advised.

Home health care nurses must obtain the skills of communicating freely with the patients they deal with and also must be able to adjust and adapt to the conditions of the homes and places they visit. They should understand that the patients must be treated with sensitivity and utmost care so as to make them feel happy and satisfied with the services. The nurses need to take care of the children incase of child care requirements from patient’s family. Child’s condition is checked thoroughly and regular follow up is given to the child’s family.

The nurses should have atleast one year of clinical experience before entering the home health nursing. There are accredited schools in which nurses have to undergo training. They need to have Bachelors degree in nursing or a Masters degree in nursing. The salaries for home health nurses are high and very rewarding. The nurses earn up to $ 50,000 PA. The nurse should continue education and it is necessary once they have finished the course of study. The latest developments and changes must be well known to the nurses inorder to work better and serve better. There are many universities and internet websites which offer continual education on patient care and health procedures.

Home health care nursing is a very challenging job and there are quite many rewards in becoming a home health care nurse. The relationship with the patient and their family is one the biggest rewards in the nurse’s view. The thinking capacity improves and the nurse attains critical thinking skills. The population is increasing at a rapid rate and there is a shortage of nursing care.
